Vampires Don’t Drive Obviously!

Good day out last Saturday; went to Borley Rectory – or should I say the site of Borley Rectory.

The Church is still there, of course, so we were able to get some good pictures around that. I say ‘around’, because it is all locked up now. Last time I was there in 1979, it was open so I was able to get some good photographs inside. Patsy and her friend went, and Gareth came along to scare all the ghosts away!

It was a bit difficult to find as the locals have removed all the sign posts to keep sight-seers away – or to try and keep them away. But we got some good photographs before going on to nearby Liston Church where the phantom nun is buried. Her grave is unmarked except by brown earth. Curiously – or maybe not – no grass, or anything else, grows on it. I have not seen the pictures yet but will try and get one put up here when I do.

Dinner in a pub on the way back which Patsy paid for (Bless her!). The only one drawback to the day was that my foot was badly swollen up (still is) and it was quite painful to walk on. I do not know what’s wrong with the damn thing, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to let it stop me from going. Speedqueen will be coming on our next trip which won’t be quite so far from London.

Amazon have finally changed the title of my latest book (“David Farrant – In the Shadow of the Highgate Vampire”) in their Lists and put me down as the actual author. Well so I am! Gareth and ‘KD’ only wrote the Introductions. Actually, sales of it are going really well, and have now passed the 100 mark. Which is not bad since last March. And I’m still owed for a few more.

While on the trip, we discussed another edition of Patsy’s last book “The Highgate Vampire Casebook”. There’s a quite a few things she wants to either put in or clarify. I think she forgot to mention last time how the ‘vampire, after it had ‘escaped’ from Highgate Cemetery, had managed to transport its coffin to that ruined Gothic Mansion in Crouch End. I am still in favour of my theory that it took its coffin on a bus (Vampires don’t drive obviously!) although I still leave an open mind to that one. Though I still don’t think it carried it in the street, which would have immediately been to alert suspicion. Going on a bus wouuldn’t have done if you think about it: it could have just pretended to have been going to some fancy dress party. A perfect ‘cover’! Anyway, hat’s just my idea. After all, it is Patsy’s book.

Well, I see Cat’s having fun on his new Blog “The Cat’s Miaow”, as is “The Lone Stranger” on his comparatively new Website “Net Curtains Lurkers”. The Highgate ‘vampire’ just won’t ‘die’, it seems – that’s if it was ever really ‘dead’ in the first place! I know the more discerning of you will know what I mean by that!

So everyone, I will keep this short. My foot is still playing up and I need to dowse it with some more vinegar. Bloody painful, but serves it right!

For the moment,
David

Did you enjoy an “appalling greasy diet”?

  2. It wasn’t a greasy meal at all, Cat.
I really can’t remember what we all ordered. Gareth is a Vegan, and I do remember he was limited to garlic bread and salad. Patsy and her friend had fish, I seem to remember. Me, I tried some vegatarian dish which was far from ‘greasy’ – apart from the olive oil dressing!
And, of course, I had a drink with it!

  3. Wow, Borley Rectory. Can’t wait to see the pics and hear/read more about it. This reminds me you had asked me for observations on Abney Park which I thought I wrote up somewhere. I’ll have to dig it out. I also need some books which I will of course pay for if you can send them over.

  4. Dear David
Sorry to hear that your foot is playing up, hope it gets better. I wish that Borley Rectory was still standing, I believe that some researchers have claimed that the fire that destroyed the rectory in 1939 was an insurance job, I think a Captain Grigson owned it then. There are a couple of excerpts from a BBC documentary featuring an interview with Peter Underwood available on Google Video. Underwood discusses Borley.
Do you think that the Borley case was an instance of a genuine haunting, or did Harry Price and others
    concoct the whole affair?.
    Regards Matt

  5. There’s a lot of things I could say about Borley and Harry Price, also about our trip of last week, but I don’t have time this evening. I hope to inform you next Friday.
